Morality in Madeinusa

As i said before in Madeinusa, morality is completely thrown out the door !  Not only is there large parties full of drinking and adultery , but Madeinusa’s dad planned to (and succeeded on) having sex with her with her sister right next to them. Though moments before this happened Madeinusa had sex with Salvador in an alley. There are men drunk on the street, there are murders of both people and animals during this time. though as someone mentioned in one of my previous posts, this reminded them of the movie  the purge  because in that movie , the people are allowed to do what ever is wanted with out any penalty , and it is when freedom like this is given that all morality is lost. Though Paul Ramsey would say that these two days of Tiempo Santo that this can act as a way to benefit the community, much like how the people in the purge thought. Ramsey said that there is ” no morality without immorality” .

Whats most ironic about this is that they are celebrating this time due to their religion, though they are going against all of the religions morals during this time.

              What a paradox.

Gluttony (sin) Gluttony is exemplified through out the movie as the town’s people all over indulge on alcohol and begin to act really careless.

Lust (sin)

How ironic that the Virgin Mary is loosing her virginity in a dark alley, but according to the movie, this isnt considered a sin because its within the holy time. Though , according to the seven deadly sins , lust in fact is a sin. Madeinusa had only met Salvador ( the young man in this gif) about a day before she decided that she wanted him and she wanted to leave with him, run away to Lima ,Peru . Though not only did she have sex with Salvador this night, but once she got home she was then taken by her father – something they had been planning for tiempo santo because it wouldn’t be a sin. Morality is out the door in this movie. Completely.

Envy (sin)

Chale is Madeinusa’s older and envious sister. We are unaware if she has this attitude of envy before tiempo santo , but through out the

whole movie (basically through out the whole Tiempo Santo) she tends to look and talk at her sister as though Madeinusa took something from her . We watch as she scowls at her and says her eyes are the color of “shit” . While Chale isnt one of the most likable characters in the movie , she is one of the only people who doesn’t fall for Madeinusa’s charm that everyone else seems to fall for. I assume she is jealous because not only did she not win the pagent in order to represent the virgin Mary during tiempo santo , but she doesn’t get as much

attention as Madeinusa does from their father.

Tiempo Santo (Ritual)

Tiempo Santo is a tradition where religion and morality are thrown out the door and sin is thought of as okay because jesus is “dead”. Tiempo santo takes place from Good friday, when Jesus dies- until easter sunday when Jesus resurrects. Through out the movie they show sinning mostly through lust and envy and you can also note that they cover the dead Jesus’s eyes so that he is unable to see the sins they commit.

As you can see tiempo santo is practically the exact opposite of semana santa.

Semana Santa ( holy week) [Ritual as well as religious background]

While this week (semana santa) isn’t really shown within the film itself, though it is similar and can relate to/ or give a background to the meaning of “tiempo santo” (holy time) . La semana santa otherwise known as the holy week is the week leading up to Jesus’ death as well as his resurrection. This week is a ritual that Catholics take very seriously every year. During this time , while it is a time of celebration , it is also a time of seriousness . It is extremely frowned upon to do any sinning at all, in fact in very strict parts no running or meat eating is not allowed. Then,  when Jesus dies  (on good friday) , a big parade and mass/church service is put on as a sense of mourning for our dead jesus, and from good Friday until Jesus’s resurrection on Easter Sunday people are mourning… but in Madeinusa things are a little different with tiempo santo.

Madeinusa (mad-ey-new-sa) is a 14 year old girl growing up in a remote village of Manayaycuna in Peru. She lives with only her sister and her touchy father — no mother , because her mother left the village to go to Lima , or at least thats what her sister says. Madeinusa was chosen to portray the Virgin Mary in the yearly tradition of “tiempo santo” (holy time) in the village. She seems sure of what she wants through out the “holy time” due to the fact that during tiempo santo there are no sins because “god is dead”. (in her words)
